It was originally based on picture books written by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry (1945) who wanted to entertain his sick son recovering from measles. Set in a fictional Island of Sodor, Thomas, a blue tank engine and his friends plays an active role throughout the series. Still so popular with little ones after all these years.
